Alma Dubai For hundred is a program and an objective that the Alumni Committee for Dubai and the Northern Emirates has adopted for its current term in office. The program aims at educating 10 students at AUB next year.

The whole affair started during an informal gathering of a small group of people who were evaluating the idea of joining the alumni committee. That small group believed that the alumni community could and should extend more support to that University and the student body than it has done until then. That group also believed that both the community as well as the committee needed to undergo some awakening to remind them of the deep links that exist between who and what we are today and what the University’s undeniable mark on that has been, still and will always be.

We have all been fortunate enough to attend one of the greatest universities of our region. It gave us a certain personality and a certain character that opened for us the widest possible horizons in our professional lives.

Official bodies, international companies, private concerns and businesses as well as many others all wanted to recruit young men and women graduating from AUB. This eagerness is not a simplistic coincidence as much as a strong belief backed by decades of experience in the consistent quality of those graduates. Whilst the individuals’ personal efforts cannot be ignored, the formation of the mind and the preparation and formation that the University gives to each individual is what ultimately enabled this latter in the future. It is about giving forty needy students a chance to study at AUB and a chance to face life with proper and adequate education.

As the University’s financial needs have almost always been somehow addressed and catered for as a top priority, the needs of the students have unfortunately remained in a second and distant rank. The geopolitical and the economical conditions prevailing in the Levant have heavily impacted personal incomes and, amongst other things, the ability of parents to provide proper schooling and education for their children. The cost of education has exponentially frown over the last twenty five years and people are no longer able to cope with the need to meet such costs. Consequently, many young and bright high school students with a potentially promising future ahead of them have to either abruptly cease their education or move to smaller and less impressive universities. With the Lebanese political situation more under control today than at any time since 1975 and with the College Hall rebuilding done and behind us, the University and its alumni must channel their efforts and contributions towards ensuring that deserving and needy students still get a chance at achieving higher education and at becoming better equipped in becoming productive members of our society.

The student body at AUB is about 4300 students. Of these, more than a quarter depend on scholarships. A larger number would have qualified had there been enough funds for such financial aid. In addition, almost 400 students are on Work Scholarship Program each month. This situation has prompted the Committee to shift the focus behind its funds raising efforts and activities from the University to the students themselves. The Dubai for Ten became the slogan of the Committee, which now aims at securing enough funds to educate ten students at AUB next year.

AUB’s objective was for us to have life and to have it more abundantly. The Committee’s target is for ten needy and deserving students to have a chance just like we did at having a much more abundant life than their present financial may allow. We can accomplish that and we should no back away from ensuring that such a target succeeds. Contributions of any amount do count, A Dirham or a hundred or a thousand of Dirhams are what ultimately make up the funding necessary to achieve this objective.
